Description

Sperrgebeit – or the restricted area is a diamond mining region in Namibia, lying between Oranjemund and Luderitz. In the early 1900s the Germans built many diamond mining settlements in the area, Kolmanskop being the most storied. Further to the south of Kolmanskop lay Pomona and Bogenfels and it is said that the diamonds here lay on the surface, glinting during full moon nights making for easy pickings. These diamonds would then be further processed using plants with machinery specific for the purpose. By the late 1950s , the Germans had left leaving behind ghost towns, which by now are in an advanced state of neglect and rot. Seen here is one of those decayed processing plant in the area around the settlement of Bogenfels……
